Technical Cooperation/Joint R&D

NITTO OPTICAL welcomes contacts from corporations and research organizations that have the capabilities of building strategic partnerships with our company to take advantage of mutual strengths.

NITTO OPTICAL does processing of optical parts. We mainly conduct the grinding, polishing, and thin film coating of optical materials, but recently with the dramatic changes in optical electronics technology, the requests of our customers have also been continually changing. In order to deal with this change, speedy research and development are essential.

NITTO OPTICAL established a Central Research Center in Akita in 2001, and we have strengthened research and development mainly in coating technology. In addition to processing technology, our policy is to also strengthen the development of processing equipment, tools, and measurement devices, equipment control technology and program development.

Purpose of Research

NITTO OPTICAL has determined the purpose of research as below.

  1. Development of processing technology which can deal with the changing requests of our customers in accordance with business changes.
  2. Development of equipment and control technology for processing extremely high precision products.
  3. Development of new products for future technology as it is possible that existing products will not be used in the future with progression of technology.

Actual examples of R&D (including current R&D items)

Research Theme Joint Research Partner Outline
Development of wave microscopes for extreme-ultraviolet rays Kinoshita Laboratory, University of Hyogo Development of defect analysis equipment for next generation exposure technology
Development of probes for magnetic force microscopes Ishio Laboratory, Akita University /Akita Prefectural R&D Center Development of high resolution probes for observing the minute magnetic domain in high density magnetic recording mediums
TiO2 photo-catalytic thin film research Professor Asano, Akita National College of Technology Creation of photo-catalytic film with an antimicrobial function in low temperatures. By creating film in low temperatures, the selection of substrates will be wider.

NITTO OPTICAL also grows crystals and develops next generation elements.

Research Theme Outline
Development of blue LED elements and white LED substrates Growing gallium nitride (GaN) with an innovative production method focusing on the development of blue LED elements and white LED substrates.
The use of Gallium nitride in LED's has been attracting attention as a next generation light source and expectations are high for development in blue LED's to white LED's as an alternative element in fluorescent bulbs.
NITTO OPTICAL conducts research on this GaN substrate in order to provide high quality products with lower prices.
Crystals for ArF lasers Research on growing high purity crystals of CaF2 (fluorite) for ArF lasers.
